5 quick tips to make 2023 the year you land your dream job
The new year is a great time for a fresh start.
It’s a time where many of us feel refreshed, motivated, and ready to take on new challenges.
Resolutions aside, let’s think bigger.
What better way to begin the new year than with a fresh new job?
To help you to harness that new year feeling, we’ve put together 5 quick tips to maximise your applications and make 2023 the year you land your dream job.
1. Figure out what the company wants from you
Using a company’s website, you can often gauge what qualities they are looking for.
For example, at the Laurus Trust we have support staff core behaviours and teacher core behaviours available to read on our website.
If you have these, don’t be afraid to tell us!
Demonstrate how you would fit in with the company culture and share their values.
For example, at the Laurus Trust one of our core values is ‘whatever it takes’ – a passionate individual with a can-do attitude would be a prime example of someone who aligns with our company ethos.
2. Put yourself in the best light
First impressions count.
A potential employer is likely to do their research on shortlisted candidates, so how you present yourself online matters.
Your social media pages will be the first insight they have as to who you are.
With this in mind, it’s important to make sure you have a positive digital footprint before sending that application.
Check that your public social media accounts are appropriately professional – if there are any photos you wouldn’t want your future boss to see, then make them private!
3. Create a ready-to-go application pack
It pays to be prepared.
Set up a master application document and make templates that you can easily edit to suit specific jobs as and when you find them.
Make sure these templates and any other information you need to complete an application form is saved in the same place.
By establishing a system like this, you’ll always be ready to apply as soon as a new job vacancy catches your interest.
4. Know your stuff
Employers love to see your interest in their company.
Do your research into the company and make sure you weave in evidence of how your qualities or values are aligned.
Learn about companies via their websites, they may even have a specific Careers page.
Arming yourself with a deeper understanding of a company will set you apart from the competition – it proves you’re genuinely interested in becoming part of their team.
5. Check, check and check again
Make sure you triple check your application for any spelling, grammar, or formatting errors prior to submitting.
You might miss things the first time round, so take a break and check it again after some time away.
If you can, have someone else read over your application to triple check everything is in ship shape!
We hope you find these tips helpful and wish you the best of luck in your job hunting!
